How to Keep Tree Roots Out of your Pipes

If you have a few trees in your yard, while they provide shade and add aesthetic appeal to your home, what’s happening underground may not be as pretty. Since your home’s sewer line is a natural source of water, moisture, and nutrients, it’s only natural that the roots of your trees may eventually start to grow toward this area and infiltrate your pipes. When this occurs, eliminating these roots from your sewer can cost quite a bit. However, there are several precautionary measures you can take to prevent this from happening.

Plant “Sewer Safe” Trees

Being smart about where you plant trees and shrubs in your yard is one of the best ways to prevent roots from infiltrating your sewer line. When you plant larger trees, make sure that you know where your sewer line is located and place these plants as far away from it as possible. If you do decide to add plants to areas near your sewer line, stick with ones that have a small root ball.

Know the Warning Signs

When tree roots start to grow into your home’s sewer lines, you can prevent the problem from getting worse. At South End Plumbing, we recommend calling us to come and look at your sewer line if:

  • Your pipes frequently emit gurgling noises.
  • Your drains clog all the time.
  • The clogs your drains develop are extremely difficult to clear.

When we get to your home, we’ll inspect the structure of your pipes and provide solutions to ensure that you don’t have to deal with a serious plumbing issue in the future.
