Common Problems For Clogged Drains
In a perfect world, you would never have to experience a clogged drain at your home. The good news is that many are completely avoidable once you’re aware of common mistakes that cause clogs. Here are some tips that will help keep you from calling a professional to deal with a clogged drain and then feeling foolish when they tell you what happened:
- Ignore that word “flushable” on most products. Many of them can cause a clogged drain, regardless of their claim to be a flushable product. Baby wipes are an example. If you think about how strong they need to be to do an effective job on your baby’s bottom, you’ll understand why they don’t break down as quickly as you’d want to avoid septic and sewer issues.
- Nix flushing facial tissue. Facial tissue is another one of those things that is stronger than toilet paper. You wouldn’t want it dissolving in your hands when you use it to blow your nose, after all. It may be tempting to toss facial tissue in the toilet because it’s handy, but resist the urge and put it in the trash can instead.
- Take care with your garbage disposal. There are many no-no items that shouldn’t go in your garbage disposal, but there are also some that just won’t break up well enough to avoid a clogged drain. In addition, grease can build up over time, creating a stickiness that grabs other things that normally would exit through the drain with no problem.
